Growth - Digital Animation

I took the previous gif I made, and translated it into a digital animation. This way I’d be able to use the procreate animation feature to easily make onion skins, and therefore trace a lot more quickly and easily.

I started out by just copying exactly what I’d done in the pencil animation, but it evolved so much further because of the freedom I had to add or take things away from multiple frames. First I finished the animation with just the fingers growing, and I thought it looked a bit plain and boring. So I thought about ‘Growth’ again and instantly thought of trees growing, like the fingers did in my animation. This prompted me to add some very quickly drawn branches, and for the hand to end up being ‘planted’ in the ground, as a nice way to end the animation.

Again, I’m quite pleased with this outcome. I developed, added to, and improved the previous pencil gif, I made a little journey of the growing fingers. Obviously the animation would look better if I hadn’t drawn it so quickly, and I actually prefer the line work in the pencil gif. If I was to fine tune this animation, I think I’d take these digital frames, and draw them again in pencil, tracing using tracing paper. However, I thought it was time I moved on to animation, to try a different medium/ process, especially as, although I don’t use it that much, I have done some animation before.
